چکیده

To meet the asymmetric (sub micro-radian towards Earth, tens of micro-radians elsewhere) pointingrequirements of the RIP mission, a hybrid approach to optical attitude determination is suggested. Aredundant pair of Coarse Star Scanners (CSS) have line-of-sight normal to the spin axis. If attitude updaterates are not too high, a straightforward extension of presently available technology is expected to producescanners that meet mass and power budgets, and 3-axis attitude accuracy of < 50 μrads 3σ. If the spacecraft tumbles, signal processing is more complex but operation is still possible. CSS provides aninitial attitude estimate to the Fine Attitude Sensor (FAS), at least one area array focal plane integratedinto and sharing aperture with the Earth communications subsystem. The possibility of an earth beacon, either man-made or natural is suggested. At different mission times and mission phases, FAS views stars,Sun, and partially illuminated planets including Earth. Some pointing difficulties are avoided byintentionally defocussing the telescope with the same mechanism used to steer beams. Obtaining lowscattering and diffraction limited performance is critical. Radiation damage assessment is also critical, sincebetter pointing performance is required late in life when damage has most accumulated.

Iac-11.d3.4.3 Evaluating Research for Disruptive Innovation in the Space Sector

Many governmental space activities need to be planned with a time horizon that extends beyond the comfort zone of reliable technology development assessments and predictions. In an environment of accelerating technological change, a methodological approach to non-core technology trends and potentially disruptive, game-changing developments not yet linked to the space sector is increasingly impo...

Efficient ICCG on a Shared Memory Multiprocessor

In this paper we discuss different approaches for exploiting parallelism in the ICCG method for solving large sparse symmetric positive ,lefinite systems of equations on a shared memory parallel computer. Techniques for efficiently solving triangular systems and computing sparse matrix-vector prodm:ts are explored. Three methods for scheduling the tasks in solving triangular systems are impleme...

Development of Textile Reinforced Composites for Aircraft Structures

NASA has been a leader in development of composite materials for aircraft applications during the past 25 years. In the early 1980’s NASA and others conducted research to improve damage tolerance of composite structures through the use of toughened resins but these resins were not costeffective. The aircraft industry wanted affordable, robust structures that could withstand the rigors of flight...
